Antioxidants The Health Benefits of Glutathione

Glutathione is a molecular structure of amino acids that occurs naturally in the body. Its purpose is to help in the ability of the body to maintain immunity to infection and illness, as well as acting as an antioxidant agent when the so-called free radicals are produced by cells.

Food intake is one main source the body uses to produce glutathione, as well as the other antioxidant agents like vitamins C and E. Asparagus and watermelon are two good food sources for producing the material the body needs to create amino acids. It also aids in healthy liver function, which is crucial to the vital processes of the body.

There are now nutritional supplements that include glutathione as an ingredient, due to its ability to decrease oxidation of cells which can lead to some health problems. Glutathione, when combined with other components, can actually aid in the treatment of some blood infections, including the very debilitating and potentially life-threatening HIV virus.

Some studies have found that glutathione does not absorb well into the body when taken orally. As a response, some products have been developed which contain what are known as precursors, or molecules which induce the production of glutathione, such as cysteine. These can be taken orally, and preclude the necessity of taking glutathione intravenously for maximum effect.

There are many other illnesses that it has been tested on, such as cancer, high blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, and infertility. While there are less conclusive results in the others, cancer seems to be affected by the administering of glutathione. It should be remembered that these studies are not conclusive as to the successful elimination of diseases, but there have been what many consider to be very positive indications that glutathione can be very beneficial in addressing many of these illnesses and diseases.

Due to the increased ability of the liver to remove toxins from the body when adding a form of glutathione to the system, many researchers have touted its ability to fight the aging process as well. While this is another assertion that has yet to be proven conclusively, the logic behind the theory is sound enough. Toxins and other cellular problems actually will increase the body???s stress levels as it tries to process damaging entities in its system. This increased stress will tax the entire body and all of its functions, which naturally will cause the rapidity of the weakening of the body.

There are some warnings that glutathione should not be administered to those with milk protein allergies or those who have recently received an organ transplant. While it has been touted for cancer concerns, some researchers are concerned about its prolonged usage in any treatment program. Of course, this can also be stated about nearly any substance or compound that is introduced to the body over long periods of time.

The best advice that can be given would be to always consult a qualified medical professional, especially those who specialize in immunology and hematology, before embarking on any regimen of supplement dosage.
